Etisalat Nigeria which is one of the leading telecom companies in the country has dragged MTN Nigeria and Visafone Ltd to court. Etisalat in the lawsuit is contesting against the utilisation of the 800megahertz (MHZ) by MTN after it has acquired Visafone.
According to the statement issued by the company, taking a legal action is very vital to stop MTN from using the spectrum at this time. The company said that the use of the spectrum will strengthen the dominance of MTN over other telecom industries in the retail data services in the market.
It should be recalled that in 2013, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) rated MTN higher than any other telecom company in the country in the wholesale leased line and retail voice markets. The company still retains the position today.
Etisalat has said that besides the lawsuit initiated against MTN, it has entered into discussion with NCC in order to understand the ground upon which the approval of the acquisition was based on.
Chineze Amanfo, the Head of Media of Etisalat confirmed the company’s position saying that the utilisation of the 800MHz spectrum by MTN will solidify their dominance over other telecom industries that held similar spectrum bands before the acquisition of Visafone by MTN.
However, the company refused to make further comment on the matter because it is before a competent court to handle.
