Two killed as gunmen raid bank in Ekiti

A branch of United Bank of Africa (UBA) in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was on Thursday attacked by some gunmen, carting away undisclosed sums of money.

During the robbery, a policeman attached to the bank and a three-year-old girl were killed.

The robbers who were said to be eight in number, entered the town through Ayedun-Ekiti, before storming the bank around 3:17pm with two vehicles.

The heavily armed robbers blew up the entrance with the aid of dynamite, a source said.

He added that, in a bid to scare away people from the vicinity, the robbers shot sporadically into the air. This led to the death of the three-year old girl whose mother’s shop was beside the bank, she was hit by stray bullets.

Despite overpowering the police officer attached to the bank to gain access to the facility, the robbers also killed him.

Customers as well as bank staff were also attacked, as many sustained various form of injuries.

However, after operating for minutes unhindered the, the criminals were said to have escaped through the back door of the bank.

It was also gathered that a police van which was hijacked and used to barricade the highway by the robbers was set ablaze after the operation.

Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Caleb Ikechukwu who confirmed the incident, said: “I can confirm to you that there was a bank robbery. As I am talking to now, the operatives of SARS (the anti-robbery squad) with combined team of 33 Police Mobile Force (PMF) are trailing the armed robbers now.

“Information at our disposal is that they escaped through the bush path. We are trying to see how we can catch up with them. Preliminary investigation is ongoing as per the number of casualities”.

On whether they carted away money, he said, “I cannot confirm that”, Ikechukwu added.
