President Buhari has on Tuesday warned the telecommunication industries in the country not to sacrifice security for gain. He called on the telecom companies in the country to abide by the rules and regulations as well as guidelines put forward by the Nigerian Communications Commission. He highlighted on the importance of SIM card registrations within the country.

President Buhari who traveled to Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates issued this warning during an interactive forum with the members of the Nigerian Community in the city.

According to the statement issued by the President through his SSA on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the security agencies would be able to pre-empt terrorist attacks if all mobile phone subscribers are appropriately registered. He urged on the telecom industries in the country to abide by the guidelines issued by NCC in this regard.

Following the advice from the security agencies, NCC has ordered the telecom companies to register all their subscribers or to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards or those that are not properly registered.

The Nigerian telecom apex regulating agency has gone ahead to impose a huge fine on MTN Nigeria for failure to meet the deadline for the deactivation of all unregistered SIM cards. MTN has gone to court to challenge the fine.
