Nigeria got her independence on 1 October 1960 and became a republic on 1 October 1963. “On 16 January 1966 a military coup brought Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi to power, terminating the first period of democratic rule.”

However, “Democracy was briefly restored from 1979 to 1983, but for most of its independent history, Nigeria was ruled by a series of military juntas. The last major military ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha, died in 1998. His successor, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar promised a transition to democracy, and accordingly a new constitution was adopted on May 5th, 1999. Elections were held and retired Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, who had previously governed Nigeria as a military ruler, was elected a president” Other leaders have come and gone since the Independence day, but recently On 29 May 2015, Muhammadu Buhari became the New President of Nigeria, After Goodluck Jonathan.

At News of Nigeria we wish the present Nigerian Democratic President Muhammadu Buhari a happy independence day, and we encourage all Nigerians to keep working towards building a more Democratic, Crime free, happy, Successful and user friendly Nigeria. We shall continue to create awareness and inform you on the latest happenings about Nigeria, inside and outside Nigeria.
