Many people have lost their lives around Rukuba road near Jos during a reprisal attack on innocent persons on Friday morning.
It was gathered that gunmen stormed the area on Thursday night while it was raining and killed about 10 people.
Women in the area, while protesting the killings burnt a military vehicle in protest of the late arrival of soldiers. The soldiers in turn opened fire on them. The youths in the area, however, took laws into their hands, attacking innocents persons and motorists.
It is uncertain how many people were caught up in the skirmish but Operation Safe Haven Media and Information Officer, Major Adam Umar and Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tyopev Terna said security men were presently on ground.
Tyopev, who confirmed the attacks, said those who sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital but did not give details of the number of casualties.
“Some people were rescued while some persons lost their lives as a result of the attack and others sustained injuries of various degrees,” he said.
Richard Tokma, acting secretary to the state government, in a statement said a curfew has been declared in the affected area and would take immediate effect, lasting from 5pm to 6am.
“Sequel to security bridge in some parts of Jos north, the governor of Plateau state, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, has approved he imposition of a curfew from 5pm to 6am in Jos north and Jos south local government areas with immediate effect,” the statement read.
“However, while ensuring the safety of lives and property of the populace, citizens are advised to exercise restraint and remain calm and report any suspicious movement to the law enforcement agents.”
