The Auxillary Bishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, Moses Chikwe and his driver, have been kidnapped by gunmen.

They were kidnapped at about 8pm on Sunday, 27 December at the World Bank area, along Port Harcourt road, Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The cleric and his driver, according to eyewitnesses, were kidnapped in his official car.

However, the car was later returned to Assumpta roundabout, while the occupants were believed to have been taken to an unknown destination.

This was confirmed by the Police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, on Monday, who said the police got information on the incident on social media, as no formal complain has been made.

He said the Imo State Police Commissioner, Isaac Akinmoyede, has already set a process in motion to arrest the culprits.

‘The Commissioner of Police has activated the Command’s Quick Intervention Team (QUIT) and the Anti Kidnapping Unit (AKU), to move into the matter with a view to rescue the Bishop and possibly arrest the hoodlums,’ Ikeokwu said.
