Senate Rejects Buhari’s Nominee Lauretta Onochie As INEC Commissioner

Valentine Chinyem

The Nigerian Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, his Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, as a Comissioner of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

Laurette Onochie, whose appointment as INEC Commissioner representing the South-South, by the president, generated public outcry within the week, with many saying she is unqualified and unfit for the role as a card carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congresss (APC).

In a memo which was seen by NigerianDaily, the senate expressed reservations in Onochie’s appointments as an INEC Commissioner, while also citing that her nomination is unconstitutional, considering her position as a card carrying member of the APC.
