IGP Bans Police from Searching Phones of Civilians without Proper Warrant

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has banned personnels of the Nigerian Police from illegally accessing the phones of Nigerians, without proper warrant.

The ban was contained in a circular to Police Commands across the country.

It was gathered that the instruction from the IGP, became necessary due to complains from civilians that some policemen flout privacy rights of law abiding citizens by searching their phones without recourse to legal processes.

With this new order, Policemen and women, will henceforth stop the act of searching phones of civilians under any pretext without first obtaining a search warrant from a competent court with jurisdiction
