Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) Urged to Embrace Technology in Revenue Collection

Deremi Atanda, an electronic payment expert has called on the Federal Government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) to make use of technology especially the e-payment or electronic payment technology in revenue collection in the country. The option according to him is more convenient and also enhances the generation of revenue to the government.

Atanda disclosed that there were now many options of e-payment methods that MDAs should utilize in collecting revenue for the government. But MDAs according to him was still having several challenges on the implementation of electronic payment policy of the Federal Governments.

The Executive Director of Systemspecs, Atanda who spoke during the 2015 E-Government Summit’s technical session said that the revenue collection cycle for the government was completed by the e-payment collection. The Summit which has its general theme as Key to Sustainable Development was held in Abuja.

Atanda spoke on the topic “How to Design and Implement Electronic Payment Platform for Government Revenue Collection. Among the six electronic payment platforms options for MDAs that he listed in his paper are bank branches, point of sales, internet banking, mobile wallet, debit and credit cards and micro finance banks.

These platforms according to him provide numerous benefits. He mentioned that the options increased the means through which revenue was collected at no cost. The revenue collectors according to him would have 168 hours rather than 35 hours per week. The e-payment options as he mentioned would also provide reliable and verifiable data for planning.

Other benefits of the e-payments options that he mentioned were access to comprehensive and timely reports, improved service delivery and expanded business opportunities which according to him would enhance generation of revenue.
