Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande was born on 23 July, 1929 and grew to prominence as the Governor of Lagos State. He was in office as governor from October 1979 to December 1983. He started life as a professional journalist in 1949 and would later be appointed an editor-in-chief of Obafemi Awolowo’s Tribune newspaper in 1956.

Encouraged by the same Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Lateef Jakande would venture into politics and run for the position of executive governor of Lagos State; which he won. As a serving governor, among many things, he is credited for the establishment of the Lagos State University.
