Earth Tremor Reported In Parts Of Abuja, Residents Advised To Be Cautious

An earth tremor has reportedly occured in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The tremor was said to have occured in Mpape and Maitama area of the FCT, at about 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday night and 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has however urged residents not to panic when next it happens but rather seek cover inside their houses, and drop down to the floor.

In a statement signed by its Director General, Mr. Abbas Idriss, it said the tremor maybe a sign of seismic movement within the earth and said “it could also be caused by a sudden break along lines which result in sudden release of energy that makes the ground to shake.

Experts however, have also been advising those in the affected areas to also take cover under a heavy piece of furniture like a table or seek cover against an interior wall and protect their head and neck with their arms, and also staying away from window, doors etc. More so, those in the open, should stay away from electric cables, tree or falling debris from buildings.

Residents of Mpape community, said the tremor led to a stampede in the area on Wednesday and blamed the vibration on activities and blasting of rocks in a quarry located in the District.
