Abubakar Shekau’s impostor in videos arrested by civilian JTF

The Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) have reportedly arrested Bashir Sarkin Yanka, a wanted Boko Haram member, who has been posing as Abubakar Shekau, the purported leader of the sect in several videos that were uploaded to YouTube and the media.

The JTF claimed the arrested sect member confessed upon interrogation that he had acted as Shekau in several videos and was responsible for the death of his mother and siblings.

Bashir Sarkin Yanka which means: Bashir the King of Slaughter, in English was arrested in Konduguga Local Government Area of Borno State, while trying to sneak into the town yesterday.

One of the civilian JTF members, Malam Shettima Bulama, who led the operation to Bashir’s arrest, said the Boko Haram kingpin was caught with an arrow wound inflicted on him by hunters.

However, the spokesman of Operation Lafiya Dole in the North East, Air Commodore Dele Alonge, said the military cannot confirm the arrest of the man believed to have impersonated a one-time leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, but said investigations are on the way to thoroughly identify the arrested man before coming out in public with any information.

“As you are aware, the Nigerian military has succeeded in routing out terrorists from some of their hideouts in the North-East and in the process some were eliminated and others have been arrested. We cannot at the moment provide the identities of those in our custody or in other places until after we have conducted thorough investigations,” the spokesman said.
