Two young men were on Saturday night killed at Sharada Quarters, in Kano state, by the officers of the Nigeria Police.
The deceased, Abubakar Isa and Ibrahim Suleman, all of Sharada Quarters, were killed, after they stepped in to prevent the policemen who were attached to the Anti- Daba Unit of the Nigeria Police from arresting another member of their community.
The policemen, according to a source, had stormed a tea joint, located close to Jummat Mosque at Sharada Phase One to effect the arrest of a suspect, Ibrahim Suleiman, who is wanted for his involvement in a crime.
They were however, accosted by the elder brother to the suspect, who is said to be the owner of the tea joint, who mobilized youths in the area to resist the police from taking the suspect away.
The ensuing confusion almost led to a mob action on the policemen.
“It was in this context that one of the officers shot three times in the air, perhaps to scare off the growing mob. However one of the three bullets landed on the chest of one the people in the crowd. He died instantly on the spot,” the source said.
Adding thay, “This situation angered the crowd in no small measure that they simply descended on the police personnel and again while trying to escape, one of officers stabbed another person in the mob with a knife, who later died at the Murtala Specialists Hospital in the state”
Following tension in the state, the police authorities in Kano, have visited relatives of the deceased as well as community members to intervene, before thr incident gets out of control.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, has confirmed that the officers involved have since been detained on order of the Commissioner of Police, Habu Sani, as investigation commences.
