President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Mr. Abubakar Adamu Mohammed as the new Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Mr. Adamu would replace Ibrahim Idris, who has attained the statutory retirement of 60 in the force.
News of Nigeria understands that the appointment will be made official shortly.
Until his appointment, Mr. Adamu was the head of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
He hails from Nasarawa state, and has served with the United Nations and INTERPOL.
Adamu was also a former Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCP) in Ekiti State.
Outgoing AIG Ibrahim Idris had met with president Muhammdu Buhari twice last week, in a bid to lobby him to extend his tenure, the president however bowed to pressure from opposition political parties and Nigerians who threatened to protest should the he extend the tenure of Mr Ibrahim Idris as police chief.
