Soldier Killed as Militants Attack Troops in Bakassi Waterfront

Troops stationed at the Efut Esighi Waterfront in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, were in the early hours of Saturday attacked by suspected militants.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Director of Army Public Relations, who also confirmed that one soldier was killed, while two militants lost their lives.

He said the militants came in several speed boats and were led by, Benjamin Simplee also known as G1, whom he said was the leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, and has been declared wanted in the past by the military.

“During the attack, a soldier was killed in action, while two soldiers were missing in action. They also burnt a buffalo pickup vehicle, the statement said.

However, he added that the missing soldiers were later found by the reinforcement deployed to the area.

“The troops’ location has been reinforced with more gunboats and air component. The clearance and pursuit operation is ongoing,” he said.

“We would like to assure the public that this singular act would not deter us from the discharge of our duties.

“Therefore, the perpetrators of this dastardly act would be found and brought to justice.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to send an unequivocal warning to all the criminal elements in the society that intend to attack any of its locations to have a rethink,” Mr. Usman said.

This is coming barely twenty four hours after the Niger Delta Avengers attacked the Bonny export oil pipeline in Rivers State.
