Shoot civilians & go to jail, IGP to Policemen

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase has warned policemen who handle weapons, to exercise high sense of caution while dealing with unarmed civilians.

Mr. Arase, gave the warning while addressing policemen at the Police Headquarters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“Shoot a civilian, go to jail,’’ he said, while directing that any policeman who engaged in indiscriminate shooting should be arraigned within 24 hours of arrest.

Arase also warned police commissioners not to send officers with psychological challenges on assignments.

More so, he warned policemen, particularly those in convoy to stop using horse whips on members of the public, saying, “Nigerians are not animals.”

He announced that the police authorities had concluded plans to construct 25,000 post retirement housing estate for its officers across the country.

He directed Abdulmajid Ali, the state commissioner of police, to look for suitable titled landed property where such estate could be built in Ogun.

He said 36, 000 officers had benefited from promotional courses during his tenure, adding that those with additional qualifications were being considered.

He said he is determined to improve the welfare of policemen.

While requesting for additional manpower to enable the command checkmate the increasing crime rate, the Ogun police commissioner, requested the police authorities set up six additional area commands in Ogun.
