Following his promise to former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom WikeWike, has renamed the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, as Yakubu Gowon Stadium while, the Old Aba Road in the state capital as the Yakubu Gowon Road.

This is in honour of the former Head of State who created the state in 1967.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the special assistant to the governor on electronic media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu.

It will be recalled that Governor Wike had, during a meeting with the former head of state and officials of the Nigeria Prays, declared that the state government would immortalise him for his role in the creation of Rivers State, before he leaves Rives State.

According to the Governor: “Before you leave Rivers State, something will be named after you in order to immortalise your name . It is shocking that no edifice is named after General Gowon in the state years after creation “.

Speaking further, Governor Wike said : “God is keeping Nigeria today. Without God, Nigeria would have been gone. Every Nigerian created by God should support Nigeria Prays.

“God used you (General Gowon ) to create Rivers. Our administration is anchored on God. With God, we will achieve all our campaign promises we made to the people. For us, the only weapon we have is God “.
