Northern governors reject Ahmad Lawan as APC consensus candidate

The All Progressives Congress, APC, governors have rejected the selection of Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate of the party, for the 2023 presidential election.

Briefing the State House correspondents shortly after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Villa, the chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, said they took the decision to support a Southern candidate in the interest of justice and peace in the country.

According to him, the 13 of them apologised to the President for receiving the information about their position after it was leaked.

Lalong noted that the governors took the decision to support power shift to the south, although they informed him that the presidential candidate must emerge through a transparent process.

He added that President Buhari directed them to meet the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, to agree on the success of the programme.
