INEC may fix Nov 16 for fresh election between Melaye and Adeyemi

Valentine Chinyem

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is exploring the possibility of fixing 16 November as elections for Kogi west Senatorial district, same day as that of the governorship election.

This was made known while fielding questions from journalits on the nullification of Dino Melaye by the appeal court, by Mohammed Haruna, INEC national commissioner in charge of Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara states.

Haruna said since the governorship election was still 34 days away, there was possibility for the senatorial election to hold same day.

The court of appeal sitting in Abuja had nullified the election of Melaye as senator representing Kogi west following the petition filed by Smart Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 26 elections.

The court however, ordered that a fresh election be conducted by INEC within 90 days of its judgment.

The INEC national commissioner was in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital for a workshop on fake news organised for media executives, journalists and bloggers by the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES) in collaboration with INEC.

Speaking on fake news, he advised Nigerians and media practioners to be careful with spreading fake news, cause of its implications on society, adding that only verified news should be allowed into space.
