President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he will not be seeking a third term in office and as such, can afford to be reckless with handling the nation.
Buhari said this on Friday during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He noted that, apart from the fact that age was no longer on his side, he would not be seeking a third term in office as the Nigerian constitution does not support it.
In his words, the president said, “I am not going to make mistake of attempting a third term or whatever term.
“Besides age, I swore by the holy book that I believe in and will go by the constitution.
“I know I am in my last term and I can afford to be reckless because I am not going to ask for anybody’s vote.”
Recall that rumour had gone round recently, especially with politicians in the opposition and some activists, accusing the president of paving way for himself for a third term in office.
However, the president’s statement today has officially quashed such insinuations.
