Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, today broke into the premises of the National Assembly, destroying anything in their way.

The group broke down the first gate leading to the complex, before proceeding to the second, which serves as the major entrance into the complex.

Security operatives who were on ground to repel the protest, fired gunshots into the air, in a bid to disperse the crowd.

The group is protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim Elzakzaky.

Unknown number Shiites were injured, with cars parked in and around the complex destroyed, while some were left in arshes, as they were burnt beyond repair.

Injured officers have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Additional security operatives have been deployed to strategic locations to forestall total breakdown of law and order in the complex.

About 40 Shi’ites were also arrested.
