Lagos State government has rejected the idea of importing doctors from China, as envisaged by the federal government.

The federal government had disclosed it is expecting medical supplies as well as doctors from China as part efforts to tackle the Coronavirus(COVID-19) pandemic.

This was revealed on Monday by the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, while giving an update on happenings in the state during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The commissioner maintained that the state is willing to accept assistance from any country including China, but stated that Lagos state is in need molecular biologists and logisticians.

He said there is need for collaboration in tackling the pandemic and China as a country has experience managing the virus which many countries and states in Nigeria do not have.

Abayomi however questioned the rational why the doctora can not be lalowed to come to Nigeria, saying Chinese medical team were free to come to Nigeria if they had been to Italy, US and Europe to render support, querying: “Why can’t they come to Nigeria.”

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as well as the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), had questioned the government motive for asking China for doctors when Nigeria’s Covid-19 crises is not at a critical stage yet.
