Border Closure Cannot End Smuggling – ECOWAS To Nigeria

Valentine Chinyem

The Economic Community Of West African States, ECOWAS, has told the Nigerian Government that shutting its against neighbouring countries, cannot deter smugglers from plying their trade.

The West African body said this, following President Muhammadu Buhari announcement that Nigeria borders remain closed, until neighboring countries begin to do much more in preventing the movement of goods illegally into the country.

He also said, this would further boost the patronage of locally made products.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, ECOWAS disagreed with President Buhari on this, stating that the closure of Nigerian border would also affect the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Act signed by the country.

“The ECOWAS Parliament calls for compliance with community provisions and the reopening of borders and a coordinated fight against smuggling in the region.

“The root causes of this recurrent situation must be studied with a view to finding a permanent solution,” the statement reads.
