Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described his choice of vice president as a “mistake”, adding that God saved him in 1999.
Obasanjo said this while speaking at a leadership and entrepreneurship mentoring session with selected school students in Abeokuta, the Ogun stats capital.
“I don’t say I don’t make mistakes – I made many of them. But one thing that has happened to me is that God has never disappointed me. And that is very important.
“For instance, one of the mistakes I made was picking a number two when I was going to become President. But because it is a genuine mistake, God saved me out of it,” Mr Obasanjo said.
Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar emerged as leaders of the nation, at Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Rift began between the two when Obasanjo was said to be seeking a third term in office, with Atiku kicking against it.
