Barely eleven days to the kickoff of the African Nations Cup in Cameroon, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Portuguese Jose Peseiro as new coach for the super Eagles.
The former Venezuela national team coach is expected to arrive the country on January 2 to resume duty.
By implication the new coach will interact with the team at their Abuja camp for few days before jetting out to Garoua where the Eagles will face Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in the group stage of the continental fiesta.
Peseiro was recommended by Roma Coach Jose Mourinho who had earlier been approached alongside other legion of coaches by the Glass House for the job following the sacking of German tactician Gernot Rohr.
Mourinho considered his compatriot Peseiro as the right man for the Eagles job. Some have queried his choice for the job insisting that he did not achieve much with the Venezuelan team and at most could be at par with Rohr who was sent packing for what a section of the Glass House dubbed poor result.
- The NFF noter that the new coach will be an “observer” at the AFCON in Cameroon with his first assignment being the 2022 FIFA World Cup final playoffs in March.
