Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, the Chief Judge of Lagos State has said that the newly introduced bail information management system (BIMS) used in capturing and documenting the accused’s biometrics and those of their sureties would help to reduce delays in delivering judgment.
Justice Atilade who expressed her determination to make the Lagos State judiciary a model in Africa at large and Nigeria in particular promised Lagosians that the judiciary under her watch would be committed and steadfast in delivering justice to all at all times.
As she welcomed judges, magistrates and lawyers in the state to Bar and Bench forum, Justice Atilade assured the citizens that judiciary in the state would carry out its functions and utilize modern infrastructures that would make dispensation of justice quicker and easier.
She called on the legal practitioners in the state who she denominated officers in the temple of justice to be steadfast and honest while carrying out their responsibilities.
While talking about the BIMS, Justice Atilade said that the new technology was introduced in order to forestall the abuse of the court processes by some professional sureties and legal professionals describing them as unscrupulous lawyers and professional.
She explained that the delay in trying cases was as a result of the failure of the prison authorities to produce suspects in court. She mentioned that the prison authorities sometimes were not able to say exactly where the suspects were reprimanded.
According to her, the BIMS would be used not just in Lagos and Ikeja divisions of the Lagos State High Court but also in the 22 magisterial districts in the state. The BIMS has a centralized database where the information of the suspects from various magisterial districts, Lagos and Ikeja divisions would be linked.
