President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all appointees under his administration, seeking political offices in 2023, to resign from office immediately.
This is coming despite despite a Court of Appeal ruling that allowed appointees to remain in office until 30 days before the general elections, which are scheduled to be held in February 2023.
Buhari gave the order at during the Federal Executive Council meeting, in Abuja on Wednesday.
The president said he had received the resignation of the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, who is seeking to be President in 2023.
He said: “I expect other members of this council seeking to be President to resign with immediate effect.”
Meanwhile, a source in the cabinet said: “We were not clear if this directive will affect other ministers aspiring to be governors, Senators and House of Representatives members.
“We are expecting more clarifications soon.”
Recall that, ahead of the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on May 30, many political appointees, had seek to extend their stay in office, while also contesting for other political offices in 2023.
