INEC Declares APCs Candidate, Godwin Obaseki Winner of Edo Gubernatorial Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday declared the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Gowin Obaseki, winner of the just concluded gubernatorial election in Edo State.

Obaseki polled 314,000 votes against his closest rival, the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who polled 253,000 votes. However, the election results announcement was not without hitches, as many protesters in support of PDPs candidate stormed the INEC office in Benin city, Edo State, to protest the result.

The Action Alliance, KOWA party and the People’s Democratic have also rejected the result, saying the figures were exaggerated and increased over night, an allegation INEC has since denied, saying the election was free and fair.
