The Minister of Power, Lands and Housing has called for the revitalization of toll gates in Nigeria saying that it would be great for revenue generation if technology is applied.
Describing how technology will be utilized, Fashola said, payment with cash would be replaced by token or by ticket. The minister said if the money is accounted for and channel into the right place, then the country will be on her way of doing what is right to the roads and bridges.
While addressing a press conference in Lagos, Fashola said that tolling system in the Nigerian toll gates seemed to be a credible alternative to revenue generation given the dwindling oil prices which he described as the mainstay of the country’s economy.
He said that fund generated through the tollgates would be utilised for the construction and management of roads and bridges throughout the federation. Having motor-able federal roads and bridges would reduce the time people spend on the road during their traveling. It would also reduce accidents on the road as well as the cost of transportation and ensure that traveling on the road is safe.
According to Fashola, utilizing e-payment in the toll gates would engender accountability as well as efficiency.
