President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly directed the release of former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki from prison, but he must return stolen funds.
It will be recalled that the former NSA to former President Goodluck Jonathan was arrested in December, 2015 by operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) for his alleged role in misappropriating $15 billion of funds meant for purchase of arms for troops fighting Boko Haram insurgents.
However, before his release can be effected, the President has also mandated all relevant agencies to recover all funds that were misappropriated by the NSA, during his time in office.
This was disclosed by an aid to Present Buhari, who said the President does not derive joy from detaining the former NSA, but rather is only interested in him returning stolen monies under his watch.
The aide said, “I can tell you that the President is not comfortable with the continued detention of Dasuki despite the offences he allegedly committed against Nigeria and its people.
“The only condition Mr. President has asked Dasuki to fulfil is to refund the huge sum of public funds which were allegedly diverted under his watch as the NSA.
“And I want to tell you that we have the approval of Mr. President to release him (Dasuki) from detention as soon as he brings the money,” the official said.
Dasuki has been in detention since his arrest despite the fact, that he has been granted bail by several Nigerian courts and recently the ECOWAS regional court, which ruled that he be released and also fined the Nigerian Government.
