The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that not fewer than 32 million active bank accounts are yet to enrol for the ongoing Biometric Verification Number (BVN).
This statement was issued by the apex bank’s Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Muazu Ibrahim in Abuja on September 26, 2015. Muazu revealed that the CBN was baffled and concerned about the number of accounts that are yet to enrol considering the fact that the BVN enrollment exercise will end on October 31, 2015.
He said, “The emerging statistical trend of the BVN registration exercise shows that there are about 52 million active bank accounts in various banks. Out of this, total enrollment stands at about 20 million, out of which 14 million accounts have been found linked to the BVN as of September, 2015. The question now is whether bank customers have been taking advantage of the extension to complete their BVN registration and also ensure that their various bank accounts have been linked to the BVN.”
It was also revealed that after the heavy rush between June and July 2015, the BVN enrollment figure has been in a sharp decline.
