Catholic priest shot dead in Imo State

A Catholic priest, has been murdered in Nkwerre local government area of Imo State.

PUNCH Newspapers reports that, Jude Egbuom, the murdered priest was the parish priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish in Amucha, Njaba LGA, of the State. He was said to have been attacked at a barber’s shop, where he had gone to trim his hair, around 8pm on Monday.

The attackers were said to have demanded for his car keys, however, when he resisted, he was shot. An unidentified young man who was with the oriest at the time of the attack, was also shot.

“The circumstances surrounding the killing of the priest indicated that it was a case of armed robbery,” a native of the community was quoted to have said.

“It could not have been a case of assassination, who did the gentle priest offend? He was from our community, Nkwerre and was doing his missionary work at Njaba, a nearby LGA. ”

The Imo State Police Spokesman, Andrew Enwerem, while confirming the incident, said Dasuki Galadanchi, the State’s commissioner of police, has ordered the tactical unit of the command to commence investigations into the killings.

“The incident is confirmed. Rev Fr.Jude Egbuom of St Patrick’s Catholic parish Amucha was murdered last night,” he said.

“Another person whose identity had yet to be known was also killed by the hoodlums. The priest was in his priestly regalia when they shot him dead.”
