Buhari Elected as ECOWAS Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has been elected chairman of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS).

The election was held at the ongoing 53rd ordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Lome, Republic of Togo.

During his remarks, President Buhari thanked the out-going chairman, President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, for hosting West African leaders during the Joint Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and ECOWAS as well as at the, 53rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

He said, although he never planned to be chairman of the commission, but some leaders still deemed it fit to elect him.

He promised to work towards achieving lasting peace, development and taking the region to greater heights, “I am truly humbled and pledge to serve and work with all of you to deliver on peace, security, good governance and socio-economic development” of the sub-region, and “take our organisation to greater heights.”

Buhari was also presented with the emblem of ECOWAS by the outgoing chairman.

The next meeting is scheduled to hold in Abuja on December 21, 2018.
